Q: What is the Premium Pork Marketing program?
A: It is a program where Producers Livestock Marketing Association helps you and a group of like-minded pork producers organize a marketing group aimed at producing and marketing premium quality pigs.
Q: Does it involve just finishing pigs?
A: It can be as involved as you, or your group, want it to be - from breeding stock to obtaining the right feeder pigs. The objective is to produce and market in volume, consistent-quality premium pork.
Q: Would it involve all of my pork production?
A: The Premium Pork Marketing program sets up an ongoing, cooperative marketing venture with a limited number of other producers. There must be a commitment for a minimum number of pigs on a regular basis. The amount is established at the beginning. The program's success requires producers capable of meeting commitments and able to work with other pork producers.
Q: How will the hogs be priced?
A: All pigs will be priced on a grade and yield basis - the better the pig, the better the net price. Base prices are usually calculated off from appropriate USDA reported price reports on the days that the pigs are killed.
Q: How do group members control the program?
A: Your group, or the representatives you select, will meet regularly to discuss the operation of the program and what changes, if any, should be made. At these meetings the groups' Pork Performance information may be presented and discussed. Outside specialists are often available to share ideas, industry trends, or new technologies. You can make whatever you want of the group at the local level - Producers Livestock provides the coordination, marketing experience and actual services.
Q: When are hogs delivered?
A: This all depends on what level your Premium Pork Marketing group operates. While we recommend the group set up minimum goals for the group of one "load" of pigs per week, it's up to you.
Q: Where are hogs delivered?
A: Central delivery points can be set up convenient to all members of your Premium Pork Marketing group. Also, pigs can be picked up at your facilities.
Q: Doesn't this involve a lot of administration and paperwork?
A: Yes, it certainly could. However, that's taken care of. The association handles the coordination of the program. Producers Livestock negotiates the base price arrangement with various packers, organizes transportation, and payment comes directly from Producers Livestock to individual shippers.
Q: What kind of information can I expect to get back on my hogs?
A: In addition to regular kill sheets, Producers Livestock maintains a confidential information database on Premium Pork Marketing kill-out information on association pigs, by individual and by group. This information, identified only by number, not name, is shared with other members in your Premium Pork group so each member can evaluate strengths and weaknesses, and take corrective action when needed.
Q: What are the benefits?
A: By marketing through the Premium Pork Marketing program, you become part of a larger marketing effort - producing higher quality pork products and marketing them in larger volumes. This helps give you the kind of production information, economies and leverage that large mega-operators have. And, you surround yourself with resources and producers who share the same goals, provide support and ideas about how to keep doing what you're doing, or make any necessary improvements.
Q: What other services will our Premium Pork Marketing group get?
A: As a Premium Pork Marketing group member, you are a member of the Producers Livestock Marketing Association as well. As a member of this association there are a number of other services available to you: complete brokerage services, marketing resources, specialized consulting services, production credit, short and intermediate term loans. In addition to these, when you market through the Premium Pork program, you are also eligible to have the money from your sales deposited directly into your bank account via our ACH process. Often this can increase the speed that your money is in your bank by one or two days. That means that your money is going to work for you faster. That's good for you, and good for your cash flow. This is available to you at no extra charge!
Q: What's it going to cost?
A: A small service fee is deducted from each load, and where applicable, insurance and trucking expense.
